PURPOSE: To combine more than two instructions from an instruction stream without knowing the starting point or length of each instruction. ;CONSTITUTION: All instructions (33) include one operation code for identifying an instruction and the length at a prescribed field position. It is necessary for those instructions to have a proper tag T indicating that they are candidates to be combined. In a system in which the length of the instruction is 2, 4 or 6 bytes, the field position corresponding to the operation code is assumed based on the evaluated instruction length code. The value of each tag T based on the assumed operation code is recorded, the complete sequence of the valid instructions is arranged by using the instruction length code in the assumed operation code. When an actual instruction boundary is found, the start of the combining instructions is identified by using the corresponding correct tag value, and the other incorrectly generated tags are ignored.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
