The cloning and sequencing of the gene which codes fora new pilinic subunit of Bordetella pertussis aredescribed. The aminoacid sequence of the maturesubunit, deduced from its necleotide sequence, issimilar but not identical to that of the known pilins2, 3 and 6. Polypeptides having the aminoacid sequenceof the mature pilinic subunit or of regions thereof areparticularly useful for the development of syntheticacellular vaccines against pertussis.
