The washing device (1) proposed has a milking-unit holder (9) which is free to move in the longitudinal direction and which can be adapted to fit milking units (15) of different dimensions. Frictional forces occur in the guide sleeve (10) of the milking-unit holder (9) which are increased by the moment due to the weight of the milking unit (15). These frictional forces balance out part of the weight of the manifold piece (16) and thus relieve the load on the short milk-transfer hoses (17). The residual force exerted by the manifold piece (16) is large enough to ensure that the teat cups (18) are pressed with sufficient force against the washing heads (3) but not large enough to cause kinking in the milk-transfert hoses (17).
