An optical recording and sorting apparatus (10) and method by which documents (15) are stripped from the other documents (15) in a stack (60) and aligned (40, 48 and 50), the data from each document (15) is recorded (70), and then the documents (15) are segregated into categories (90) based on the data recorded (70). An apparatus for sequentially registering the documents (15) is used that both separates (30 and 34) the documents (15) at desired distance from each other and aligns (40, 48 and 50) the documents (15) on a desired movement path.
