The present invention relates to a wide variety of tumor suppressor genes and proteins expressed by genes in appropriate host cells. The protein is a second in-frame AUG codon-initiated retinal subpopulation protein with a molecular weight of about 94 kD. The present invention relates to a method of treating mammals having a disease characterized by abnormal cell proliferation such as cancer or tumor cells. The treatment is carried out with p94^RBExpression vector or p94^RBAnd administering the protein into the host cell.
