Low density cross-linked porous polymeric materials (LOW DENSITY POROUS CROSSLINKED POLYMERIC MATERIALS)

A suitable oil phase emulsion containing a polymerizable vinyl monomer, a crosslinking monomer and a polymerization initiator is obtained by using a sugar fatty acid ester as a surfactant. The amount of surfactant required to form a suitable oil-in-water emulsion is reduced by using a saccharide fatty acid ester as a surfactant. In addition, hydrophobic foams can be obtained by using saccharide fatty acid esters.
