Cell-differentiation inducers, cell proliferation inhibitors and oxidative carotenoids useful as antitumor agents, retinoids and related conjugated polyenes, inducible fractions and compounds
Retinoic acid, a typical carotenoid, -carotene, lycopene and canthaxanthin, and retinoic acid, a representative retinoid with less intensity, undergoes extensive oxidation and is active against cell proliferation, tumors and tumorigenic viruses that are models of oxidized -carotene Non-toxic is useful as a reagent and produces a substance with useful properties as an accelerator of cell differentiation. This fact can be traced back to the chemical analysis of the highly oxidized beta-carotene-producing mixture in which there are no or little amounts of various forms of vitamin A present. Furthermore, it is possible to dissolve the oxacillin oxide that can not produce vitamin AThe biological activity of tin and lycopene can be seen in the presence of vitamin A and other active substances. Although the cell proliferation inhibitory activity and the differentiation promoting activity of oxidized -carotene are similar to those of vitamin A itself, its effect on oxidized -carotene is generally stronger in various environments. Unlike vitamin A, the oxidized -carotene in the present invention is non-toxic. The oxidized carotenoid is a mixture of compounds separated into many fractions according to molecular weight and polarity. The fraction shows comparable or higher anticancer activity to the unfractionated oxidized carotenoids.
