The present invention provides a nucleic acid molecule having a nucleotide sequence encoding a human MOG that is a self-homologous to a demyelinated autoimmune disease. The present invention also provides a recombinantly produced human MOG or antigen thereof. Antigen fragments of MOG that can be synthetically produced represent T cell epitopes of human MOG. MOG and its fragments are useful for diagnosing and treating autoimmune diseases. In addition, methods of screening and developing therapeutic agents useful for the treatment of autoimmune diseases are also disclosed.
