An absorbent material having a porous sorption macroporous structure in the form of interconnected strands separated by void spaces. The porous macromolecule has interconnected absorbent gelling particles having a surface cross-linked with a cationic, preferably polymeric amino-epiclouol, hydrin adduct. Upon contact with a liquid, such as water or body exudates (e.g., urine), the porous absorbent macromolecular structure is swollen and can absorb the liquid. The absorbent material preferably comprises a substrate, preferably a cellulose substrate, which is bonded to one or both surfaces of the surface of the porous macromolecule.;Absorbent materials are useful in absorbent articles such as diapers, adult incontinence pads, and sanitary napkins.
