The mouth piece (2) forms a seal with the patients lips and is connected to a standard yoke (4) which has an inlet valve (5). The yoke is joined to a connecting tube (6) which leads to an oxygen reservoir (7). The oxygen reservoir is in turn connected via an inlet (8) to the oxygen supply. The oxygen reservoir has the exclusive function of preventing excess pressure in the inspiration side of the yoke by means of pressure release valve (12). Gas is expelled from the yoke on the expiration side (9) through an outlet valve (10). To eliminate dead space, the inlet and outlet valves can be located in the mouthpiece. The patient breathes through the mouthpiece with a closed nose both in and out and in a very short time is lungs are fully oxygenated. In this condition difficult intubations can be undertaken.
