The system automatically controls access to places whose use is subject to a toll, or controls a user's authority to be there. Each vehicle authorised to use the place transmits an authorisation signal. A control device (42) is arranged in the traffic place or at an entrance to it. It receives and analyses the characterising signal. An image recording and processing appts. (45) associated with the control device records, stores and/or processes an image of a vehicle to identify it in response to an identification control signal.The control device has a control signal output to output the identification control signal in dependence on receiving and the analysis of the characterising signal. The image recording and processing device has a control input connected to the control signal output of the control device. In response to output of the identification control signal, the recording and/or permanent storage and/or processing of an image of a passing vehicle is carried out via the input, when the control device has received no characterising signal or one without the required characteristics.
