The protective circuit includes the high-speed break over device (2) connected between the line to be protected and ground. An electronic circuit (9) detects the presence of an impulse, and issues trip signals if an impulse is detected. The trip signals operate a semiconductor switch (8). The semiconductor switch is connected across a capacitor (6) connected between the line to be protected and ground. The operation of the switch sets up a resonant oscillation between the capacitor, the inductor (7) in series in the protected line and the break over device. The oscillation extinguishes the arc in the break over device, allowing it to return to its passive state.
