The locking device has a pair of fish plates or feet (1) with a bearing surface (2). At right angles to the bearing surface there is a transverse groove (3) for a screw or a bolt (4) to join the two fishplates. Each of the fishplates also has a groove (5) defined by lateral flanges (6, 7) into which the gripping devices (8) fit. These turn eccentrically around an axis (9) which runs at right angles to the bearing surfaces (2). The grips are released by rotating them away from the bearing surface and the eccentrical point e has been chosen so that in relation to the central axis (17) of the grips (8) it is adjusted in relation to each end of the fishplate (10) and in relation to the web (14, 15) of the corresponding end of the rail (11, 12).The gripping devices (8) have a slip resistant or non-slip surface on their outer edges which are in contact with the web (14, 15). The surface of the grips may also be toothed. The grips also have stops (18) which limit how much they can rotate to an area which allows them to make contact with the web. The gripping devices are made of toothed segments mounted eccentrically.
