In a magnetic field modulation type overwrite magneto-optical recording-reproducing system for effecting the recording of information on a magneto-optical recording medium with the bottom surface of a magnetic head floated and moved relative to a protective film formed on the surface of the magneto-optical recording medium, the surface roughness &agr; of the bottom surface of the magnetic head represented by the center line average peak height (R.sub.pm) and the surface roughness &bgr; of the protective film of the magneto-optical recording medium satisfy the relational expression that 0.15 &mgr;m≦(&agr;+. beta.)≦ 1.0 &mgr;m.
