METHOD FOR RESTORING MULTIVOLUME DATA SET DURING VOLUME RESTORATION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system which can automatically and flexibly restore a multivolume data set stored on one or more failed volumes. ;SOLUTION: When a plurality of volumes 208-211 gets out of order and a 'catastrophic' data loss occurs, data are restored from backup storage devices 600-602. For each volume, all data sets which are partially or completely stored on a selected volume before the volume gets out of order are identified. Each single volume data set stored on the selected volume before the volume gets out of order is restored from the backup storage devices. When a multivolume data set, the first segment of which is stored on the selected volume, is identified, the whole data set is restored. Even when a specific volume gets out of order after a 'head crash', etc., the data are restored from the backup storage devices. All data sets which are partially or completely stored on the selected volume before the volume gents out of order are identified.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
