It is intended in this process that catalyst beds are operated below the solidification point of sulphur during the conversion and then regenerated by warming. In order to regenerate the catalyst beds, which are deactivated after a certain time by elemental sulphur, during normal operation with the lowest possible outlay in terms of apparatus, at least two reactors always work one behind the other in the direction of flow, and the direction of flow of the gas stream is reversed by means of multipath fittings. This process has the advantage that it needs substantially less piping, is better controllable and less susceptible to trouble.
