PURPOSE:To eliminate a gap between picture elements and to improve picture quality without losing image information by overlapping the picture elements. CONSTITUTION:Light generated in a light source 602 is reflected by an original 601 and optical signals provided with primary density information for one line are received by the respective sensor elements of a CCD 604 through a mirror 626 and a lens 605. Then, the optical signals provided with the image information of the picture elements 22 and 23 of a first line arrayed in a main scanning direct are detected and converted into analog voltage signals indicating the primary density information. The primary density information is observed as 10 in the picture element 22 and as 21 in the picture element 23. For a second line, the half of the width in the feed direction of the picture elements is overlapped and it moves in the feed direction to the positions of the picture elements 26 and 27. That is, an original is moved in a direction opposite to an arrow in the feed direction with half the pitch of the width in the feed direction of the picture elements 22-27. Since the image elements are mutually overlapped in such a manner, the gap in the feed direction is not caused.
