METHOD OF TREATING ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION WITH HIRUDIN AND ACETYLSALICYLIC ACID IN PATIENTS NOT UNDERGOING THROMBOLYTIC TREATMENT

The invention relates to the discovery that the administration of thecombination of hirudin and Acetylsalicylic Acid (ASA) to patients notundergoing treatment with any thrombolytic agent, inhibits and/or preventsmyocardial or cardiovascular events in the patient. The invention furtherrelates to the pharmaceutical combination of a platelet inactivating drug,acetylsalicylic acid, and a direct thrombin inhibitor, hirudin, for the treatmentof patients with acute myocardial infarction who are not undergoingthrombolysis. A pharmaceutical composition comprising the synergisticcombination of hirudin and ASA, in the absence of any thrombolytic agent,is particularly useful in the therapeutic and prophylactic methods of theinvention.
