IMPROVED METHOD FOR INCREASING THE PRODUCTION CAPACITY OF SULFURIC ACID PLANTS AND PROCESSES

A process for removing SO2 from a gas mixture having a volume ratio of SO3 to SO2 greater than 1. Typically, the gas mixture is from the final convertor in a dual absorption sulfuric acid contact process. The gas (57) is contacted with sulfuric acid (75) containing peroxy compounds (85) in contacting zone (60). A purified gas stream (90) containing less SO2 than the feed stream is removed from the upper portion of the contact zone and a stream of sulfuric acid is removed from a lower portion. The process can be used in the manufacture of sulfuric acid to increase production capacity without an increase in plant size.
