The invention relates to processes for the preparation of phosphine derivatives, to certain novel phosphine derivatives obtainable by this process and to their uses, for example in catalysis. In particular, to a process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I) where R?1, R2 and R3¿ may be the same or different and are hydrogen, or optionally substituted hydrocarbyl or optionally substituted heterocyclyl groups; and X, Y and Z may be the same or different and are optionally substituted alkylene or arylene groups.
