A method and apparatus for measuring the characteristics of a received fading signal using two or more branch diversity receivers is provided. This fading characteristic is generally proportional to the speed of the user. In the first embodiment, the number of times the antenna branch changes during the selection diversity process is counted and the result is scaled for unbalance between branches. The output of the fading quality estimator, representing the fading and generally proportional to the speed, is thus obtained.
