A magnetic tape material is produced by depositing a coating [2] on a carrier tape [1] and then it passing through a magnetic field. The layer is formed by magnetic particles in a binding agent. The magnetic field is produced by a series of magnet pairs [3,3',4,4',5,5',6,6'] of alternating polarity. Attached to the main magnets are additional magnets [16,16'] having a width some 80 % of the width of the main magnets.
