The method uses a cushion (K) which is inflated and deflated by a hose (SCHL) from a remote source and guided by a stiff wire (D). With the inflation of the cushion a water-free compartment is formed downstream from the cushion. Water is present in the upstream direction. A current electrode (E1) is located upwards near the cushion. It is connected with one pole of a voltage source (G) the other pole of which is connected to a remote earth (FE). With the occurrence of a leakage (L), the application of a voltage from the generator causes a current to be emitted through the electrode to the remote earth. The strength of the current is measured with ammeter (A). The alteration which is indicated leads to the detection of the leak in the pipeline, which can be measured. The stiff wire gives a length measurement from its starting position, which locates the leakage.
