The invention concerns a process for the multi-layered coating of substrates with an electrophoretic coating material and a powder coating material, at least one layer (2) of electrophoretic coating material being applied to the substrate (1) by electrophoretic enamelling. The substrate (1) is then optionally air-dried completely or partially, a layer of powder coating material (3) is then applied, and finally the electrophoretic coating and powder coating are stoved jointly.
