A subsoil gas monitor collector assembly is lowered vertically into a borehole located both above and below the water table. The novelty is that the assembly: (a) gathers gas by means of a gas-permeable yet water-tight pipe; (b) the pipe is sub-divided into sections separated internally by plugs and externally by rings; (c) the pipe is internally strengthened to prevent interior collapse, and is protected externally against damage; (d) the assembly is suitable to remain in the soil for several years and the repeated collection of samples; and (e) the pipe incorporates a central gas tapping tube (variant A), a number of gas-removal tubes projecting into the relevant sections (variant B), or a number of gas-removal tubes extending externally (variant C) into the relevant pipe sections. Each pipe section is discrete and sealed from adjacent sections.
