The invention relates to polycrystalline fibres of alumina (aluminium oxide) or of alumina-containing multicomponent oxides, a process for the production thereof, and viscous aluminium-containing liquids suitable for the production of gel threads or fibres. The liquids of the invention consist of one or more partially or completely hydrolytically condensed compounds of aluminium and optionally other elements and/or precondensates derived from the abovementioned compounds. The hydrolytically condensed aluminium compounds are derived from compounds of the formula I, Al(OR*)3 (I in which the radicals R* are propyl or butyl, by reacting Al(OR*)3 with an alcohol of the formula II or III, R1-X-R2-OH (II) R1-CX-R2-OH (III in which R1 is an alkyl radical, R2 is an alkylene radical and X is O, S or NR3, with R3 being hydrogen or alkyl. The aluminium compounds resulting therefrom are complexed with a low-molecular-weight carboxylic acid and hydrolytically condensed. Gel threads are drawn from the liquid of the invention and the gel threads are dried and sintered. IMAGE
