PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound capable of producing a block copolymer having a controlled structure according to a reaction in one stage. ;SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [either one of R1 and R2 is a lower alkyl and the other is an alkyl or cyano; A is an alkylene or a direct bond; A' is a bivalent hydrocarbon; M is a recurring unit derived from an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer; E is a terminal group of a polymer obtained by a polymerizing reaction of the α,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer; (n) is 10-1,000; J is a direct bond or an ester bond when T is CONH and J is an ester bond or amide bond when T is the direct bond]. Furthermore, the compound is preferably obtained by reacting, e.g. a vinylic polymer represented by formula II (Q is an amino group, etc.) with an azo compound represented by formula III (X is an amino group, hydroxyl group, etc.).;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
