PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for the production of foods, drinks, cosmetics, tobaccos, etc. ;SOLUTION: The objective compound is 4a-hydroxy-tri(or tetra)hydro-4,4,7- trimethyl-2(6H)-naphthalenone expressed by the formula I (the dotted line is double bond or single bond). The compound of the formula I can be produced by subjecting a diketone of the formula II to intramolecular aldol condensation reaction in the presence of a base to produce the compound of the formula III (4a-hydroxy-trihydro-4,4,7-trimethyl-2(6H)-naphthalenone) and partially reducing the product to obtain the compound of the formula IV (4a- hydroxytetrahydro-4,4,7-trimethyl-2(6H)-naphthalenone) (the compound of the formula I is the compound of the formula III or IV).
