PURPOSE:To obtain a highly safe absorbent with a less amount of eluate by using a silane compound having a structure in which two lower alkoxy groups are bonded to a silicon atom, and by setting the amount of the eluate to a specific value when the absorbent is extracted under hot water for 30min. at 115 deg.C. CONSTITUTION:A porous carrier having a silanol group on its surface is preferably used. A silane compound adapted to be used for treating the carrier, and composed of two lower alkoxy groups bonded to a silicon atom, and groups other than alkoxy group bonded to the remaining two joints thereof. When this silane compound is made into contact with the silanol group-containing carrier in the presence of water, the lower alcohol silano group reacts with the silanol groups so as to be bonded to the carrier. The carrier treated by the silane compound and bonded, if necessary, with rigand, is cleaned by water or a water solution so as to remove eluate. This cleaning should be made for several hours. Thereby it is possible to reduce the amount of eluate to a value less than 500mug/g when it is extracted with hot water at 115 deg.C for 30min.
