PURPOSE: To provide a method for grinding the outer periphery of a wheel so as to avoid push-in of chippings during machining and disassembly of an axle box. ;CONSTITUTION: A measuring plane 8 is formed on the outer periphery 5 of a wheel formed with a tread 2 and a flange 33 by turning. After the diameter 9 of the measuring plane is measured, a turning tool is moved to a center axis depending on a friction depth 6 perpendicular to the center axis 4 as this measurement result, so that the tool can have a new profile with the same diameter as that of a ground wheel set after grinding. The ground wheel set is held and fixed into an axle box in the disassembled condition for driving and rotationally driven by at least one friction roller 3.
