Novel farnesyl derivatives which are inhibitors of the prenylated protein methyltransferase enzyme, and useful as anti-cancer drugs, have the following formula: wherein RSUP1/SUPrepresents farnesyl, geranyl or geranyl-geranyl; Z represents C-RSUP6 /SUPor N; RSUP2 /SUPrepresents H, CN, the groups COORSUP7/SUP, SOSUB3/SUBRSUP7/SUP, CONRSUP7/SUPRSUP8 /SUPand SOSUB2/SUBNRSUP7/SUPRSUP7/SUP, wherein RSUP7 /SUPand RSUP8 /SUPare each independently hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, and the groups COOM and SOSUB3/SUBM, wherein M is a cation; RSUP3/SUP, RSUP4/SUP, RSUP5 /SUPand RSUP6 /SUPare each independently hydrogen, carboxyl, alkyl, alkenyl, aminoalkyl, nitroalkyl, nitro, halo, amino, mono- or di-alkylamino, mercapto, mercaptoalkyl, azido, or thiocyanato; X represents O, S, SO, SOSUB2/SUB, NH or Se; and the quaternary ammonium salts and N-oxides of the compounds of formula I wherein Z is N.
