Nucleic acid analogs (PNAs) of the kind described in PCT / EP 92/01220, which hybridize strongly to nucleic acids, are used to inhibit nucleic acid amplification processes such as PCR. False positive reactions in subsequent PCR assays are prevented by hybridizing PNA to PCR amplification products. Single base pair mutants are distinguishable assays are performed by using PNAs that hybridize to one of the two alleles to inhibit the PCR amplification that is formed. Asymmetric PCR amplification is performed by starting PCR symmetrically using similar amounts of forward and reverse primers, and once amplification is done, one primer is disabled by hybridizing PNA thereto.
