The detector for registering thermal neutrons used lithium fluoride (6LiF) to convert the neutrons to ionised radiation and there is a device to detect this ionised radiation. The neutron detector is built up of layers of lithium fluoride (6), and on each side of each layer (6) is a semi-conductor diode (2,3,4,5) for detecting the ionised radiation. The detector diode can itself contain the lithium fluoride. The layers or strips of lithium fluoride (6) are arranged perpendicular to the collector layer (3) of the diode. The thickness of each layer of lithium fluoride is less than the range of the 3H radiation which arises from the conversion of the neutron beam.
