The apparatus includes a scanner which scans travel documents, such as a passport. A dataprocessing system interprets the scanned data and a printer outputs a form according to the data. The data are displayed on a monitor (8). The apparatus is located at a check-in desk at an airport. Preferably, the apparatus includes a housing (1) which is accessible from each side. The housing includes several slots (3) for insertion of travel documents. An electro magnet is located behind each slot to hold the document during scanning. The filled in and printed form is output by at least one second slot (4).
