The device contains at least one parallel DC path (15) on the DC side with at least one switch element (12) which is opened when the oven (11) is operating and can be closed when the DC flowing through the furnace is interrupted, so that at least a part of the wattless (idle) power generated by the idle power compensation device (3) is compensated by the current flowing in the rectifier. At least one controllable semiconductor is designed for at least partial compensation of the idle power. The parallel d.c. current path can contain at least one inductance (14) esp. a coil. The switching element can be a controllable semiconductor esp. a thyristor e.g. a gate turn-off or GTO thyristor, or an insulated gate bipolar transistor or IGBT.
