Sugar beet filter-press comprises a bank of plates on a shaft which are progressively advanced by a ram (6) and pressed against an end-stop. Adjacent packets of plates are coupled e.g. by chains, allowing successive plates to pull slightly apart from each other and release the drained moist filter cake. The bank of plates has two or more packets of plates on the same shaft which can be pulled apart in succession and emptied of filter cake, while the other packet(s) remains closed. When the ram (6) is withdrawn from the compressed position, it pulls apart only the plates (3) in the first packet (10). A second ram (12) is fixed to the machine frame, which compresses the emptied first set of plates (10) and opens the second (11) set of plates.
