Closed underpressure valves (3) fitted in pre-set pattern to the inside of the gripper jaws (20 are vacuum-loaded during gripping but opened where they register with the blank (1) when the jaws are converged in the allocated blank surface (4). Vacuum lines (6) connected to the jaw recesses (5) used to house the valves are both opened and closed by these valves (3). The valves can be tripped by direct mechanical contact or indirectly by electrical contact makers, proximity switches etc. The valve flap (7) is tippably mounted via a first trip leg and a second sealing leg, and the underside of the sealing leg turned away from the blank face (4) has both a release surface and an inclined stop face as well as an underside sealing lip to feed and bleed the vacuum.
