A process for the matrix - assisted laser desorption and ionization of analyte molecules, in particular of fragile or unstable molecules

Matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionisation (MALDI) of analyte molecules (I), especially fragile and/or labile molecules, is effected using a combination of two laser light-absorbing matrices. One matrix (M-1) is used for desorption of (I). When exposed to a pulsed laser, the other matrix (M-2) releases a gas, which expands adiabatically together with (I) in the vacuum used in the process. A pulsed laser with a wavelength above 200 nm is used.
