PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to play a music with a simple operation by providing a musical sound signal generation method comprising the step of generating musical signals through reading the data on phrases selected among play data stored by phrase unit. SOLUTION: A computer 2 stores play data of e.g. twenty four phrases for each musical instrument and character. A user selects a spefified phrase number from the data of twenty four phrases by sequentially performing changeover with the use of a game pad 1. The computer 2 outputs a musical sound parameter for a background play by the style of automatic play and a musical sound parameter for a solo play outputted according to the operation of the game pad 1. These parameters are fed to a sound source 3. The sound source 3 generates a musical sound signal based on the musical sound parameter or a parameter for an effective sound in order to supply it to a speaker 4. Accordingly, improvisation in musical play can be made and music play can be made by a player having no special experience or technique with a simple operation.
