PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to detect an arc between a pantograph and a trolley cable, by removing the fluctuating part of a pantograph voltage caused by rectification ripple to extract sharp voltage restoring constituent out of the remaining fluctuating constituent. ;SOLUTION: In an arc detector 4, a presensor 49 cuts a DC part out of the differentiated wave form of a pantograph voltage Vp. A ripple removal calculating part 45 calculates the difference between the current value of the pantograph voltage data and the value for a cycle of commercial frequency to remove the ripple of the pantograph voltage data. A sharp rise detection calculating part 46 removes the low frequency fluctuating part of the voltage data from which the ripple constituent was removed to detect the sharp rise part of a certain level or larger. A sharp rise point frequency determination calculating part 47 determines the frequency of the occurrence of the sharp rise points, and outputs a trip signal 42 and a detection display output 441 if a plurality of sharp rise points exist for a certain period. Then, an arc is detected on condition that an electric car is brought to a stop, and a load is disengaged to prevent the breaking of the trolley cable.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
