PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to segment characters even when a stroke is added to a character preceding one or more from a current character. ;SOLUTION: A stroke addition judging means 1 calculates the estimated lateral width of a character and the returned distance of a stroke from an inputted on-line character string and mutually compares both the calculated values to judge whether the storke is added to a character preceding one or more from the current character or not. At the time of judging no addition of a stroke, characters in the character string are segmented by a character segmention means 2 using writing order similar to the one used for conventional on-line character segmentation. At the time of judging the existence of an added stroke, the characters are segmented by using a character segmentation means 3 for executing character segmentation without using the writing order similar to the one used for the conventional on-line character segmentation.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
