PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer with a betaine compd. having a high β-value introduced at high density into a high molecular side chain via covalent bonds by using a specified compd. having a pyridyl. group. ;SOLUTION: A compd. having a pyriclyl group represented by the formula is used. In the formula, A is H or acyl, Q is a single bond, O, S or SO2, (m) is an integer of 0-10, (p) is an integer of 0 or 1, and in the case of m=0 or p=0, Q is a single bond. A compd. with a diamine component chemically bonded using such a betaine compd. as a polymerizing group is synthesized. A high molecular nonlinear optical material comprising a polymer obtd. using this diamine compd. as a monomer has superior secondary nonlinear optical intensity as well as satisfactory moldability. Since the optical material is a glassy (non- crystalline) polymer, unlike a crystalline polymer the optical, material is less liable to scatter light and is excellent in transparency.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
