PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lithium manganese oxide having uniform and fine particle size and structure and capable of increasing the capacity of a positive electrode in the case it is used as a positive electrode active material of a lithium ion secondary battery. SOLUTION: This lithium manganese oxide fine powder has a formula Lix Mn2 O4 (x is 1-1.05) and an octahedral powder particle shape and this lithium ion secondary battery comprises a positive electrode containing the powder as a positive electrode active material. The production method of the powder having the octahedral powder particle shape includes processes of; dissolving lithium acetate and manganese acetate in a solvent; forming a gel by adding gelatin to the resultant solution and removing the solvent; forming a lithium manganese oxide powder by calcining the gel at 300-500 deg.C; pulverizing the powder; sintering the resultant powder at 750-850 deg.C for 6-12 hours; and cooling the sintered product. Consequently, a lithium ion secondary battery comprising a positive electrode containing the powder as the active material enhances capacity and highly efficient charge and discharge property and is applicable to a widened range of application fields.
