NEUTRAL SIZING AGENT FOR PAPERMAKING AND SIZING OF PAPER USING THE SAME SIZING AGENT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a neutral sizing agent exhibiting excellent size effect in neutral papermaking by preparing an aqueous dispersion of an alkenyl- substituted succinic acids/rosins with an esterified product of a polyhydric alcohol and a fortified rosin. ;SOLUTION: A polyhydric alcohol is added to a mixture obtained by mixing an alkenyl-substituted succinic acids which are addition reaction product of a 6-36C olefin oligomer with maleic anhydride with rosins in a weight ratio of (1:99) to (20:80) so that a ratio of hydroxyl group equivalent weight of the alcohol to the carboxyl group equivalent weight of the acids is 0.2-1.5 and the alcohol is subjected to heat reaction with the mixture of the acids with rosin to afford an esterification reaction product and the resultant reaction product is compounded with fortified rosin in a weight ratio of (10:90) to (80:20) and the resultant compound is dispersed into water by an emulsifying and dispersing agent to provide the objective neutral sizing agent for papermaking. The sizing agent in an amount of 0.01-5 wt.%, preferably 0.05-2 wt.% expressed in terms of solid content is added to pulp slurry in neutral papermaking area of pH 6-9 to carry out sizing treatment.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
