PURPOSE: To provide a scale deposition-preventive agent and method with which polymer scale deposition on the polymerization vessel during the polymerization of an ethylenic monomer can be prevented, and a less-colored and high-quality polymer can be obtained. ;CONSTITUTION: An ethylenic monomer is polymerized in a polymerization vessel in which at least part of the vessel's surfaces which come into contact with the monomer have been covered with a coating film comprising a natural naphthoquinone pigment and poly(vinyl alcohol) having a degree of saponification of 70mol% or higher. The monomer is represented by the formula CH2=CR1R2 [wherein R1 is hydrogen or methyl and R2 is hydrogen, CnH2n+1, COOH, COOM (where M is an alkali metal or ammonium ion), COOCnH2n+1, CN, C6H5, C6H4R3 (where R3 is hydrogen, OH, CH3, or CH=CH2), OCOCnH2n+1, OCnH2n+1, or CH=CH2, wherein (n) is an integer].;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
