Composting apparatus comprises a number of composting containers (5) positioned in a chamber in which they are automatically connected to a central suction manifold (2) evacuated by compressor (4) whose output is passed through bio-filters (17,18). The system is controlled by air temperature, humidity, partial pressure and throughput signals to a central processor. Composting apparatus comprises a number of composting containers (5) positioned in a chamber in which they are automatically connected to a central suction manifold (2) evacuated by compressor (4) whose output is passed through bio-filters (17,18). Heat from the exhaust air is used, via a heat exchanger, in a heat pump. Measurements of temperature, humidity, partial pressure and air flow rate are made at the chamber and the suction line. These signals are sent to processor (15) to regulate the conditions in individual containers by throttling valves (12) and by adding moisture through sprays (16). The system aims to maintain air leaving the containers at a temperature of 42degreesC and saturated. The throughput is regulated to match the capacity of bio-filters (17,18). The atmosphere of the chamber, from which the process air is drawn, is also regulated in terms of temperature and humidity through air conditioner (10).
