The sliding sectional overhead door comprises a series of hinged panels (10,11) sliding on roller wheels (12) in vertical guide channels (13). The vertical weight of the door assembly is carried by cables (14,15) and pulleys (31,32) connected to a weight balancing body member (16) at one side of the door. The weight balancing body member includes a constant weight upper section (17), hinged to a flexible variable weight lower section (18), and is housed in an elongated door-height box housing (26). The lower section of the counterweight comprises a large number of heavy modular flat plates (23) hinged together to fold flat, concertina fashion at the bottom of the housing.
