A METHOD OF IMPROVING DATA COMPRESSION OVER UNRELIABLE UNDERLYING NETWORKS

A method provides for improved compression techniques over inherentlyunreliable underlying networks. A fixed compression dictionary is sent from afirstterminal to a second terminal during the start up of a communications sessionbetween the terminals. The first terminal then compresses data in accordancewiththe transmitted fixed dictionary. The receiving terminal expands thecompresseddata in accordance with the received fixed dictionary. If packets are lostover thenetwork such loss does not have a deleterious effect on the compressionalgorithm asin known adaptive compression techniques.
