The invention relates to screening assays to identify agents which target members of the signal transduction pathways involved in the inflammatory cell response that are specifically modulated by DHEA. Such agents may be used as compounds or lead compounds for the development of drugs for the treatment and prevention of inflammation resulting from a variety of conditions, including but not limited to ischemic/reperfusion injury, autoimmune diseases, allergies, and other diseases caused by or involving the inflammatory response.
