A preheater or precalciner kiln (14) is modified to feed solid fuel into a riser duct (12) of the kiln to enable efficient environmentally sound use of solid waste-derived fuel. The modified kiln includes a solid fuel delivery port (36) in the riser duct (12), a fuel feeder device for feeding solid fuel through the delivery port (36), and a fuel suspension device (40) for holding the solid fuel for combustion in a fixed position in the kiln gas stream.
